It's 1st of May. Sun is shining. I take a beach walk with my wife and dog. The butter garlic smell meets my nose while walking on the beach.
Oh my. Why again did I stop eating fish?
This newsletter would be a scam and distraction if I wouldn't go where it hurts.
So let's talk about the biggest driver of biodiversity loss in our oceans.
Fishing.
First Salmon Sushi was also my last frontier I gave up, before switching fully vegterian/vegan. So I get it; the stuff is tasty.
Second, let's get the painful facts out of the way:
34% of fish stocks are overfished
Bottom trawling releases as much carbon as air travel.
38.5M tonnes of bycatch (sea turtles, whales, sharks & co.)
10% of marine litter is connected to fishing (ghost nets etc.)
Local fishermen lose livelihoods because of overexploitation
Third, you are here to take action. So what can you do about it?
πͺ From easy to hard:
Watch Sea Spiracy
Buy only local fish, from local small fishermen
Have a look at WWF fish guides about your local fish
Eat fish only in restaurants
Shift from fish protein to plant protein (great recipes here)
Help your family, friends & collagues to switch
Get your company to take ocean actions
Demand & create new strict Marine Protected Areas
Pick 1 and start.
We all can create a wilder ocean simply by choosing what ends up on our plates.
In times of Trump & co. I found this quite empowering.
Have a wild weekend!
Best,
Oli
